Last Friday night, I found myself back under the dazzling lights of Hudsons Circus in Redland Bay—a place that feels like a second home after 11 incredible years working as their photographer, website manager, marketing and promotions manager, social media manager, and animal coordinator. It’s always a joy to immerse myself in the world of circus magic, and this visit was no exception.
My mission for the night was to photograph the breathtaking acts for the website, ensuring Hudsons Circus continues to shine online as brightly as it does in person. The performances were nothing short of extraordinary. The roller-skating duo from Ethiopia dazzled with their gravity-defying spins and lifts, while the aerial performers mesmerised the crowd with their elegance and strength high above the ring. Gilberto the Clown had the audience in stitches with his comedic antics, providing a playful contrast to the heart-pounding spectacle of the motorbikes speeding inside the Globe of Death. Of course, the majestic horses and camels added their own unique charm to the show, showcasing their beauty and grace.
Between the action-packed photography sessions, I stepped outside for a breather—and had an unforgettable encounter. A wild possum, seemingly curious about my wheelchair, climbed down a nearby tree and made its way over to me. Without hesitation, it sniffed and investigated the front wheel of my chair, its tiny paws and inquisitive nose exploring this strange new object. For a few moments, it was just me and this unexpected visitor, sharing a quiet connection amidst the bustling circus atmosphere.
The night was a perfect reminder of why I love what I do. Being part of Hudsons Circus allows me to capture moments of pure wonder, from the skilled artistry of performers to the surprise magic of nature. Whether it’s updating the website with fresh images or witnessing special moments like the possum encounter, every day brings something new and unforgettable. I’m back to the circus this week photographing the Red Show unit in Strathpine and Gold Show unit in Redland Bay.
